When confronted with the question to design a school with sports and playground facilities to be shared with two other schools, we decided to create this playfull wilderniss.

When confronted with the question to design a school with sports and playground facilities to be shared with two other schools, we decided to create this playfull wilderniss.

The facilities, among which a hamam, a sports center, a kindergarten an a small
theater will all be hidden under a roof. The roof provides a landscape devoid of design, but full of small water streams, rocks, stones. A place without function, guidelines, a place where kids can make a mess, build huts, play with mud. In an area where obesity among kids is growing rapidly, where everything has been functionally claimed, this seems to be one of the few methods to stimulate kids to leave their computer games and to move.

Harmen van de Wal, in collaboration with Christian Muller, CMA, was asked to tutor in the summerschool of the academy of architecture in Rotterdam. The students worked on an ongoing researchproject Krill has been engaged in for years. The research is about scripting the social consequences of entering an apartment inside a multi-apartment building, focusing on what we call the “elevator-effect”.
Th students created a script for Wijnhaven Island in the center of Rotterdam. Purpose of the script was to create a better connection between the dwellings and the public space on the streets. In doing so the students added valuable new rules to the set of urban rules originally composed by Kees Christiaanse.

Krill has been working on defining the script in a series of projects and collaborations, among which with Machiel van Dorst (Technical University of Delft) and lately Christian Muller (CMA). In 2009 the collaboration was extended to Academies of Architecture in Arnhem (ARTEZ) and Rotterdam (AVBR).
Krill was asked to design the landscape around the buildings of the Prinsenstichting, an institute for mentally disabled in Purmerend. The objective was to keep as much as 80% of the area paved, create high fences around three of the buildings, while still maintaining a green, park like environment. By borrowing patterns from wall paper and turning them into hedges of variable height, a landscape was created in which one could still feel submerged into the green. A large car park was required, leaving no space for large green elements. Here we decided to insert a ‘hagelslag’ of flowerbeds, little hills thrown like confetti all around the place.

Low density in the car park, high density around the buildings.

Project: urban planning

Commision: Lex Wallsall Competition

Designteam: Harmen van de Wal, Patricia Venero, Beverley Walker

Program: housing, conference centre, hotel, parking

Location: Wallsall, United Kingdom

Start of design: May 2008

Wallsal waterfront is promising to be a treasure to the city. It is a hidden potential, step by step revealed to the public. This started with the development of the art galery at the very end of the canal, it will be brought a significant step closer by the 1st phase master plan. Providing the necessary shelter against the road, the new public space is a treat for Wallsal. Now the final step in exposing this treasure needs to be taken. The waterfront needs to open up and show it’s beauty to the rest of the city. Therefor we propose a way of ending the water axis in a water park.

A place where water cannot only be seen, but also experienced. Five buildings with relatively small foot prints are loosely positioned on a square. This square is tilted, using the exisitng slope, and sinks into the water, giving four of the buildings wet feet. The buildings are connected through an arching, cross shaped bridge with each other and the quays. Coming from the highway, this transparently organized set of buildings immediately shows the waterfront when crossing the bridge.

The city of Wallsal lacks performance space. It was also suggested that a conference center was needed. Two functions that can easily be combined. The only thing is; a conference facility is big. It is merely an interior world where people meet in the conference rooms, but, more importantly, are able to net-work in the corridors and lobbies. It needs a large building and would easily fill up the
better part of the site. Now, there is nothing wrong with a big building, but then again, big buildings can be built almost anywhere. Here one needs to be able to feel and experience the water. The conference center is therefor distributed over four buildings. Foyer, conference rooms, meeting rooms are positioned in different buildings connected through a corridor under the arching bridge.

From an introverted black box, the conference center now is opened up, just like the waterfront is. It shares important functions, like a cafe and a restaurant with the public realm instead of keeping them for itself. It is a flexible scheme, allowing different simultanuous use when needed. When a conference is being held, the dynamics of it immediately makes itself seen from the public space. The largest conference space can be used as a performance space for 550 people,
but also smaller groups of people can enjoy a performance in one of the small meeting rooms.
